How to Build an Effective Email List

Email remains one of the strongest marketing tactics. The higher the quality of the emails you send, the higher the results will be.

  • A targeted customer email list builds loyalty and has the power to drive repeat business.

Email Capture is Key. Here are a few tips on successfully building a customer email list:

1.       Create easy ways for customers to sign up.

QR Codes - Make it easy for customers to sign-up on their own. Most email services offer the Create a QR code option. They are easy to create and can be used on signage and social media. Here is an example from Mailchimp and your email service will have something similar:  Share Your Signup Form

  • Website - Pop-up and stagnate email sign-up forms are easy to add to your site. This allows you to capture emails from those who are browsing your website. Email sign-up forms can typically be created through your website admin or your email service. Here is a sample of a very simple form, but many have the option for imagery and custom branding.

Social media - Consistently post and invite your guests to stay connected and sign-up for your email list. Make it a comfortable part of the check-out process.

Be tactful and simply explain the value of signing up. Ask for emails and know why you are asking. Offer a reward for signing up such as a 20% or 30% coupon off their next non-sale item that will be sent to their inbox.

Here are some creative ways to ask for a customer’s email address:

  • We’d love to put you on our email list so we can let you know what’s happening in the store.

  • Are you currently receiving our email coupons?

  • Are you in our system? “NO” let’s get you added.

We want you on our list so we can tell you about upcoming sales and events!

2.       Train the team.

  • Roleplay, write a script, or rehearse interactions with your team.

  • Knowing how and why will overcome objections.

  • Create an internal contest by setting goals and tracking progress. Rewards are always good!

 

3.       Set up your email service.

An email service (like Mailchimp or Constant Contact) allows you to create professional emails, track open rates, and keep your email list clean and organized.

 

4.       Create an email calendar for the month and the year.

  • Planning and scheduling email is key.

  • Connect with customers at least once a week.

Remember, less is more:

1. Keep emails short and easy to read.
2. Always invite customers back into your store.
3. Ensure address, phone number, and current hours of operation are easy to find.
